  THEME: DRIBBLING

===FIRST 30 MINUTES===
Inform players that theme is dribbling.

Dribble-in-the-Box: Each player with a ball in a rectangular area marked by cones/lines. Space should be reasonably tight so that players have to work to avoid each other.
  • Progressions
    • Progression 1: Call "rabbit" or "turtle" to have players speed up and slow down (for older kids, use "Beasley" and "Agoos")
    • Progression 2: Call "inside," "pull back," or "hook" to have players turn 180 degrees (Inside of foot to turn ball back between legs, pull ball back with sole of foot, outside of foot to hook ball and pull back past outside of leg.)
  • Hints
    • Hint [1]: [describe progression]
Knock-out: Each player with a ball in same rectangular box. Players dribble around, shielding own ball while trying to knock opponents' balls out of box. Play several rounds. If it gets down to 2 or 3 players and no one will make an aggressive move, announce a 20 second warning, with no winner if time runs out.
  • Hints
    • Hint 1: Shield the ball by turning body sideways to defender.
===SECOND 30 MINUTES===
Remind players that theme is dribbling.

Defender Attack: Use the same rectangle. Divide the group into two equal teams. Half are dribblers in the box, each with a ball. The other half become defenders waiting outside the box. Have a watch available. On the coach's signal, start the watch and have two defenders run into the box. As soon as they have knocked all of the ball outside of the box, the defenders exit the box, the dribblers come back in with a ball (may be a good idea to have a few extra balls lying around), the exiting defenders tag two of their teammates who enter the box, and the play continues. Do this until each defender has had two turns going into the box. Stop the watch. Then switch teams and see which defenders have the lower time.

Ronaldo: Players should practice the shoulder-drop and step-over (descriptions later in this section) by themselves, then pair up and face each other about ten yards apart. Each has a ball. Players move towards each other at slow speed, performing a move when they reach each other, then continue across to where the other player started. Both players do the same move (for instance, each faking right) so as to avoid running into each other. Start slow, or they will run into each other (!), then have them increase speed.

Work on two moves: first, the shoulder-drop (right and left versions), second, the step-over (right and left versions). The shoulder-drop works like this. To get started, we'll fake left and then go right. When ready to do the move, the player will step hard with their left foot to the left of the ball and drop their left shoulder sharply. They will then use the outside of their right foot to push the ball to their right before straightening out. Mirror image for fake right, go left.

The step-over is similar. Again, start with fake left/go right. The player lifts the left foot over the ball and plants it on the far side, then brings the right foot around and uses the outside of the right foot to push the ball right before straightening out. Mirror image for fake right, go left.

===THIRD 30 MINUTES===
Remind players that the theme is dribbling. That said, we still prefer a pass to dribbling, but there are times when dribbling makes sense: to create time before making a pass, when there aren't any good passes as options, or when beating one man leads to a good chance on goal.

Scrimmage: "Freeze" to stop play occasionally to make coaching observations. Full field if possible, 5v5 with no goalkeepers. Set up two cones within the goal mouth, roughly 2 feet from each post. Goals (worth 2 points) only count if the ball goes between the post and the cone, not up the middle.
  • Progressions
    • Progression 1: Award 1 point for a dribbling move (shoulder-dip, step-over) within proximity of a defender.
    • Progression 2: Award 1 point for anyone who dribbles in to the other teams penalty area.
  • Hints
    • Hint 1: Use the pass to set up the dribble.
    • Hint 2: Use the dribble to set up the pass.
