St. Petersburg FL - January 2011

Plan A was to park at Eckherd College at the southern tip of St. Petersburg, ride down Pinellas Bayway and out to Fort Desoto Park, then back up to State Road 699 and up the St. Petersburg coast to Clearwater before returning to the start. Total distance: 70 miles.

Plan B: I ended up parking a few miles from Eckherd College at the head of the Pinellas Bayway in time for a sunrise start. The ride out to Fort Desoto Park was as promised--beautiful views of the Gulf of Mexico. Once back on 699, I found myself on the bicycle equivalent of Route 1 in Revere, but with occasional glimpses of the Gulf. I'd taken a bit more time snapping pics at Fort Desoto Park, and really needed to get back to the conference. Had 699 been more scenic, I might have pushed on, but I instead cut things short at John's Pass at the north end of Treasure Island. The pictures in the slide show (see link below) are in the reverse order that I took them, as I wanted to end with pretty pictures and not a mailbox worthy more of the Hilltop Steakhouse than anything nature had to offer.
