"Warning: nothing is flat in the valley!"
- Jon M.*

*Jon's quote followed a request on my part for ride suggestions in the Mad River Valley, the planned location for various Labor Day Activities.

If the weekend had a theme, it was "Take the Low Road." As in, Low Road on which our gracious hosts Scott and Liz own a fantastic Vermont home. It was great seeing them and the Patty/Dana and Mark/Wendy families.

SATURDAY: Cycling to Larrow Farm Road
Betsy, Scott, and I set off for Larrow Farm Road, the soon-to-be home of Jas S. We went up. And we went down. And we went up again.

And the log cabin destination made the ups and downs worth it (Strava).

SUNDAY: Green Mountain Stage Race
The objective was to watch the finish of Stage 3 of the Green Mountain Stage Race (GMSR) at the top of the Appalachian Gap (App Gap for short). I was going to ride up and have Betsy meet me at/near the top with the van, the intent being my avoiding having to ride the App Gap descent. As I approached the Mad River Glen base parking lot, a road worker informed that I'd beaten the road closing by 2 minutes--it was 10:58am.

I continued up, knowing that Betsy wouldn't be able to follow and that I'd have to limp my way back down. Hard climb worth doing, with race spectating being the bonus.

Later in the afternoon, we hiked a bit at Knoll Farm.

MONDAY: Blueberry Lake trail riding
To cap off the weekend, we headed for the Blueberry Lake mountain bike trails. Turned out to be an awesome choice, with single track so flowing and buttery smooth that Robert the J wouldn't have broken a bone. Not technical, but lots of elevation change ... and a total blast!
