2014 Hub on Wheels

If someone tells you that the Hub on Wheels (more info here) is a great bike ride, don't believe them. It's TWO great rides.

The first ride is from the start until the point where the 10-mile loop splits off. That's where the second ride starts.

Betsy and I pedaled over from Cambridge to arrive at Government Center around 7:45a. We topped up on Lara Bars and made our way over to Court Street to queue up. A combination of walking and toe-dabbing took us around the corner onto Congress Street and, after 5-10 minutes, across the official start line. Left up Sudbury Street, right down Cambridge Street, and up and over to Storrow Drive.

The cruise along Storrow Drive and Soldiers Field Road is the high point of the Hub on Wheels. (Not literally--that dubious honor goes to the top of 8% grade Bellevue Hill Road at an oxygen-depriving altitude of 298 feet where we crossed paths with Jeff L.)

We passed a guy towing a massive speaker system blaring some Vampire Weekend.
We passed a young man riding a prolonged wheelie on his mountain bike.
We called out to Kent D coming back the other way.
We passed a cyclist attired in full Ronald McDonald regalia.
We passed a pair of riders with drums and cymbals mounted on their handlebars.
And we passed the Mavic car with not only neutral wheel, but also neutral bike, support ... for a fun ride! Great stuff all around!

We made the U-turn out by the Eliot Bridge and headed back toward the Fenway and a fun but relativley unnoteworthy ride number two. The pics below tell the story of that ride better than words will.
