Al Bolea

Typically, I accompany ride photos with facts and figures detailing route, duration, average and maximum speed, and the like. For no real reason I can think of, though, I left my camera home today. And while the day saw a fast pace, the numbers weren't the real story. Of course, they rarely ever are.

I didn't know Al Bolea, who died too young in 2006 of myelofibrosis, a degenerative bone marrow disease under research by the MPD Foundation.

I had the good fortune, however, to ride with people who *did* know him. And in a departure from the usual custom of riding with strangers before heading home without getting to know them, I had the better fortune to spend some time in their company at a post-ride gathering.

Al's friends described a man who cared deeply about cycling and about cyclists. One can do far worse than leave behind an annual day filled with both.

Al, always keep riding.
