Happy New Year 2018!

I intended to pare back to a dozen favorite images for this year's holiday greeting. Then I found two albums I didn't see on my first pass. Hereafter, a Dieffenbach's Dozen is fourteen. Take that, Baker.

January

Betsy and I got out in icy conditions to hike another section of the Appalachian Trail. Our third section, I think. We've probably totaled close to 10 miles by now. It's easy to through-hike the AT. Doing it a few miles every year or two? That's hard.

April

Owls Head Maine for Easter. Hike along the coast near the lighthouse.

May

Chebeague Island for Memorial Day weekend. Old boat launch rail at the Boatyard.

June

The Ken Harrod Road Race, hosted by the Minutemen Road Club, always makes for a big draw for 545 Velo. Since I don't road race, I photo-documented the team's efforts.

June

What better way to follow up a day at the bike races than with ... an evening looking at beautiful hand-made bikes. Geekhouse. Seven. Royal H. Beardman. Firefly. Honey. This Cambium saddle from Brooks would exquisitely top any bicycle.

July

Doug B has offered a long-standing invitation to visit his family and him at their Coventry CT cottage. I finally wised up and accepted. Sweet ride on some fun trails, great lake-side dining, ... and plenty of places to hang wet cycling gear to dry.

August

I've volunteered at Leadville. I've raced Leadville. This year, I crewed at Leadville for friend Jeff O. The three perspectives differ widely but rest on the same fantastic foundation ... the town of Leadville and its people. This random rider came into Twin Lakes outbound a bit hotter than was appropriate but corrected nicely.

August

A different random rider coming through Twin Lakes inbound had a flat to fix and our crew tent city had the tools and supplies he needed. I don't know the details other than that he came in under the 12 hour limit.

September
Mount Etna was the highlight (and highpoint) of Betsy's and my Sicily trip. We drove to the base at 1910 meters, took the cable car to midpoint 1 at 2500m, then hiked up energy-sapping and sometimes steep sandy terrain to 2920m at midpoint 2. The overall summit is at 3329m and requires a guide--the full day climb and descent of over 1300m would be doable in a day ... but at considerable time and exertion expense.

September

On the way down, we hiked the cable car segment, catching this vista as we neared the bottom.

November

Brooks scores its second mention of this greeting--almost certainly a record (and notably for my not yet owning one). This particular Brooks saddle found itself mounted on a display bike at the Seven manufacturing facility in Watertown MA. The factory tour is at once impressive and intimate. If all goes well, a Seven adventure bike (and Brooks Cambium saddle) will grace my stable in the not too distant future.

December

NBX is a staple of the New England cyclocross calendar. It's typically the first of the CX venues to feature a fire element ... albeit not (yet) part of the race course itself.

December

From the frozen tundra of NBX to the frequent snow of Ice Weasels, the NECX landscape begins to wrap up. This year, Ice Weasels definitely delivered on the snow. Its technical course should favor me, but in two of the last three years, (ultimately self-inflicted) mechanicals cost me valuable positions.

December

For hundreds of New England CXers, 545 Velo's BOSSCROSS closed out the season. For what seemed like hundreds of 545 Veloers and volunteers, planning, running, and cleaning up after BOSSCROSS consumed the season. Yeah, there was a hiccup or two, but I don't think a single racer thought, "Yikes, clearly these guys have never put on a race before." Adams Farm and its snow helped us throw a great party. And it's just the beginning ...
